Summer Camp Zell am See, Austria

20th July 2012

Watching the Clouds, Hoping for Sun!

The day is already off to a great start. We had a storm last night, but it has cleared up, but low hanging fog still blankets the mountains.

The blue adventure campers took off on a mountain bike excursion to a local lake just as the red adventure campers did yesterday. The yellows and reds were in the gym all morning doing an activity called VC Survivor, based on the television reality show. They learned how to do use a compass among other things and then did a scavenger hunt all over camp to find check points with a compass.

The language camps are making great advances in their comprehension of English and German and the film campers are all over camp with various props filming scenes for the movies that we will not see until next week.

After a delicious lunch we loaded up on a bus and went on an afternoon excursion to Sigmun Thum Gorge and Dam. It was cloudy and overcast, during the whole hike, but the rain did not come until the last few minutes when we were about to get on the bus. Half way through the hike the campers had a chance to go swimming and play at a playground. Only the brave ones went into the frozen river and were awarded the prestigious polar bear club honor by counselor Ed.

It was a great trip and the campers all had fun and stood in awe of the gorge and dam where we could see the bottom of the gorge through the crystal clear water. The campers all had a great trip and got some great photos of their own to share with family back home.

After a yummy dinner we had a fantastic event put on by counselors Paz and Ian. We had to make our devices that could help sling-shot cows around the world. The campers had to participate in different activities to earn more material for their devices that would hopefully give the egg a better chance of surviving. They had to do tasks such ad peeling an egg without your hands, eating a cookie without your hands, passing a tennis ball from person to person without your hands, keeping a feather up in the air using only your breath and then the last was to defrost a frozen t-shirt and put it on.

The campers then had twenty minutes to build a contraption that protect their egg from cracking after being tossed off the second story of the hotel. Three eggs ended up making it.

The campers went to bed excited and looking forward to our weekend excursion to a mountain hut!
